Last week it was announced that Pentecostal Theological Seminary counseling student, Laura Land, is one of only twenty-five individuals awarded a scholarship from Duke University’s Center for Spirituality, Theology, and Health. The scholarship will allow Land to participate in the Center’s 2014 Summer Workshop, a 5-day summer research course that focuses on how to conduct research on religion, spirituality and health, and how to develop an academic career in this area.

“Awards like this help confirm the quality of our counseling students and programs,” said Dr. Oliver McMahan, Vice President of Spiritual Formation for the Seminary. “Laura receives this scholarship from Dr. Harold Koenig, the Director of the Center for Religion, Spirituality and Health at Duke Medical Center and a professor in the Duke Medical School, a gentleman whom I consider a foremost authority in the world regarding religion, health and spirituality.”

The Center for Religion, Spirituality and Health is based in the Duke Center for Aging and Human Development and is focused on conducting research, training others to conduct research, and promoting scholarly field-building activities related to religion, spirituality, and health. The Center serves as a clearing house for information on this topic and seeks to encourage dialogue between researchers, clinicians, theologians, clergy, and other interested parties.

“It is such an honor to be able to participate in this research workshop and receive mentorship from Dr. Koenig,” said Land. “I will have the chance to fine tune a research project I’m fortunate enough to have been a part of that surrounded Dr. McMahan’s theocentric method of counseling.”

Land anticipates graduating from the Seminary in June 2014 when she will earn her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Land will travel to Durham, North Carolina, August 11-15, 2014, to participate in the workshop.
